I am a consultant engineer working on the design and manufacture of research and development test rigs. I have a first class degree in mechanical engineering from Loughborough University and i have experience running STEM activities for groups of 20-30 secondary school students. I am offering GCSE/A-Level Tutoring in Maths and Physics. As I have achieved both academic achievement and practical experience in these subjects I can easily integrate real world applications of the topics being studied which I find helps students to fully understand, and remember, the subject matter. During my professional career I have also mentored groups of students who are carrying out extra-curricular industry led STEM projects. I am also a fully qualified SCUBA diving instructor regularly running courses at Loughborough University and have also worked as an instructor abroad teaching a large range of age groups.
How would you describe your teaching style?
I offer problem based learning approach which is tailored to the topics currently/recently being studied in your course. As I have extensive industry experience I can, and will, relate these topics to real world problems as I find this greatly helps students understand and remember the theory, as well as making it infinitely more interesting. Closer to exams I will shift the teaching to focus on exam preparation, this will involve working through past papers, developing exam techniques and working on revision aids.
What qualifications do you have?
I graduated from Loughborough University in 2016 with a first class mechanical engineering degree.
Tell us about your experience...
I am currently a engineering consultant working on the design and manufacture of research and development test rigs used by aerospace and academic institutions. This requires a strong grasp of mathematical and physics theories as most designs start life out as a equations on the 'back of an envelope'. Whilst I was studying I ran STEM activities for groups of 20-30 secondary school students. These activities were hands on design and make projects which were intended increase interest in STEM subjects. During my professional career I have mentored several groups of A-Level students who were carrying out extra-curricular industry funded engineering projects. I am also a fully qualified SCUBA diving instructor and regularly run courses at Loughborough University.
What locations do you tutor in?
I am happy to offer tutoring in Nottingham, Derby or Loughborough. I can travel further afield but I may charge travel expenses
What is your personal message to students?
Maths and Physics shouldn't be hard or daunting, anyone can do it. It also shouldn't be taught without any indication about how it can be used in the real world; believe it or not there is a use of algebra!
