Muddled Maths is an affliction which Ord is obsessed with helping to cure. Qualifications: B.Arch (Hons); Cert. Ed. He worked until 2019 between two independent schools. Website www.muddledmaths.com explains that he brings to each tutorial ... in addition to his 30 years’ experience ... a unique library of original and imaginative visual material. His slightly unorthodox approach can unlock maths concepts. He prefers to tutor at pupils' homes in West Edinburgh where his one-to-one fee is around £40 per hour but, if pupils of equal ability can be paired up, the rate falls to £26. Charges depend on distance and seasonal demand.
How would you describe your teaching style?
Visual; imaginative; slightly unorthodox. I use analogies between maths concepts and familiar objects or situations in daily life to explain and make the concepts memorable. Understanding - not memory - is key. Conversational, friendly but professional.
What qualifications do you have?
Certificate in Education (Southampton Uni 1970) Bachelor of Architecture (Hons) (Edinburgh Uni 1969)

"I so get it!" was the joyous response from one Higher pupil recently, who routinely started each tutorial with a new topic of concern. She achieved an A Pass, whereas a C Pass at Higher was achieved by a pupil who had got only 8% at Prelim. 'Hearing the penny drop' is the ultimate reward. I have enjoyed 30 years continuous tuition with an average of about 15 SQA candidates per year. I have my own website with scores of testimonials. FACTO is a Times Tables game I have invented and produced commercially. Until 2019 I was employed full-time between independent two secondary schools where I worked one-to-one with pupils in my own room.
What locations do you tutor in?
All over Edinburgh, although preferably on the West side. I stay near Murrayfield. Farthest tuitions (at higher than basic rate, and probably at weekends) have been Queensferry, Ratho, Penicuik, Dalkeith.
What is your personal message to students?
If you are serious about trying to understand maths, and will work hard with me, I can certainly help you. It does not matter how bad at maths you think you are. If you are worried, I can probably set your mind at rest. Regrettably I can not guarantee a pass, or that you will end up liking maths (although I do!) And if you are lazy, please get someone else. As a pupil I received tuition, and I know what a difference it made for me in the subject (not maths) which I had come to dread.
