I am a DBS checked, experienced and graded 'outstanding' history teacher. In a previous life, I used my history qualifications to launch a career in corporate law but returned to the subject I love. I most recently worked at an OFSTED 'outstanding' academy in West London. I am now based in Beaconsfield and directly accessible from the A40, covering most of the South Bucks area for one on one tuition. Having worked with students of all abilities, I have developed a range of effective techniques for improving exam performance and adding value to students final grades. As a tutor, I want to help students in a positive environment so that they can build their confidence and motivate them to achieve their goals.
How would you describe your teaching style?
The basis of everything I do with students is positivity - we all feel better, more confident and motivated when we are in a positive environment. I will focus on your historical skill - your ability to write essays and extended responses to sources - and I will constantly hone and finesse your work, down to the smallest details that will nudge your marks upwards. I will also help you with exam technique - how to approach each paper and use your time most effectively. This is the stuff that teachers are often too tight on time to do in much depth with their students. New A-Levels and GCSE are so heavy on content, that historical skill and how to pass the paper, is often relegated.
What qualifications do you have?
I have a degree in Ancient History from Warwick University. After graduating I went on to study my Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course before completing my training to qualify as a solicitor in the City. I later re-trained as a teacher whilst working full time at an OFSTED outstanding academy and completing my PGCE in History with distinction
Tell us about your experience...
I have spent the most recent part of my career working in an incredibly results driven, high-pressure environment, with students ranging from extremely challenging to very talented, and ensuring they achieve the best possible exam results. My last GCSE class had a 100% A*-C pass rate despite a handful of students entering the course with predictions of an E grade. However, where I added most value in my department was in pushing B students up to A students and A students up to A* students. Before teaching, I worked as a corporate lawyer in London, using the analytical skills from my history training. I worked with a range of high-profile clients doing mainly merger and acquisition projects before becoming a bit disillusioned and bored. I wanted to return to the subject I love and so became a history teacher, which was the best career decision I have made so far.
What locations do you tutor in?
I am based from my office in Beaconsfield but am very close to the A40 and accessible to locations across South Bucks. I have also had students from Reading and Rickmansworth.
What is your personal message to students?
My teaching style is fundamentally positive and outside of the formality of the classroom, I want students to feel relaxed and confident. You are already under enough pressure, I am here to work as your team mate to motivate you and support you to achieve your best possible grade. I am all about exam technique, written style and the small details that will keep inching your grades upwards.
