I am a qualified (PGCE and QTS) History teacher based in North Yorkshire. I am a University of York BA History graduate, and hold a PGCE with distinction in Secondary History from the University of Sussex. During my training year and five years full time teaching, I have worked in three schools and taught History at KS3, GCSE and A-level. In my last school, our History department secured the best History GCSE results in the county, and in the last two academic years, over half the students in my mixed ability class achieved grades 7-9. I have experience teaching the AQA and Edexcel GCSE History specifications, and specialise in: Germany 1890-1945, Cold War 1945-1972, Elizabethan England 1568- 1603, Health and the People 1000- present day. I believe strongly that all students can gain enormously from the study of History, and particularly enjoy the challenge of supporting all students to access and critically engage with the subject. I believe in discursive and creative learning, and use these strategies to make exam practice enjoyable and rewarding. I believe it is this approach which allows students to both thoroughly enjoy the subject of History, and achieve highly in examinations.
How would you describe your teaching style?
My teaching style is varied but rigorous. I like to use images, music and film to inspire and engage students in the subject content they are studying. I find that History is brought alive when viewed through the prism of ordinary life and popular culture which is still relevant today. I am passionate about History being a collection of many 'truths' rather than just one singular story or 'truth' and always use a range of source material and historical arguments when teaching. I am consistent with sharing the idea with my students that History is 'written' by historians. Yes, there are facts - knowledge that is simply accurate. However, most of History is created by humans, and humans have opinions, beliefs and personal experience that influence their narrative of the past. So, despite History being rooted in evidence and fact, it is actually a very creative discipline. Even when teaching to a GCE specification, I think this discussion is essential. In my experience, the more time students spend discussing and sharing their ideas, the more they enjoy the subject. Enjoyment is essential, if students are going to be willing to dedicate time to revision and exam preparation. I really enjoy teaching to a GCSE specification, and am methodical and organised with my approach to teaching exam answers. I believe that de-coding GCSE questions and utilising relevant knowledge can be a rewarding process and can be taught in an empowering and positive way.
