As an experienced English tutor I offer support to students looking to improve their prospects in national and independent school English exams, including the 11+, 13+, GCSE and A-Level. Tuition is always tailored to each student's needs, from short courses prioritising exam technique to extended study that will broaden the student's appreciation of English more generally – giving them the confidence and depth of knowledge necessary to excel in the challenging interviews required by private schools and leading universities.

Tell us about your experience...
2016-8 – Tutored full time throughout academic year, including seven GCSE students, five 13+ students, six A-Level students, and eleven students preparing for 11+ exams in years 5-6. Students I tutored this year have been accepted at their target schools including KCS Wimbledon, Francis Holland, Wetherby and Sevenoaks. I have also taught business English to adult students from Russia, China and Argentina. 2012-4 – Tutored a Chinese student, who only began learning English as an adult, to pass her IELTS exam allowing her to apply and be accepted at a well-regarded UK university. 2013-14 - Tutored three eleven years old in separate weekly one hour sessions, for whom English was a second language, all of whom achieved the grades they needed to enter their preferred secondary schools, in two of the three cases surpassing the grades anticipated by their schools at the beginning of the year. 2013-4 – Tutored a student who had fallen behind after several changes of school, and years of education outside to achieve A* in both English Literature and Language at GCSE. " We really could not hope to find anyone more corresponding to the ideal of the perfect teacher than Jimmy. Despite an unexpected GCSE English exam due to a school change, and therefore a very limited time for intervention, Jimmy has been able to give the tools, method and confidence to allow our son to face the exam with high expectations. Jimmy is punctual, prepared, professional, organized and really able to motivate, communicate to and support a young student, but what is making Jimmy's tutoring really special is the enormous and evident passion he has for teaching. He even dared the "beast from the east" to don't deprived our son of crucial lessons. Our son is quite picky with teachers and he is rarely complimentary, but of Jimmy he has a stellar opinion and unlimited trust. We are hoping to continue to have him as a permanent pillar of our son education for the challenging years ahead of him." “We were very impressed by Jimmy’s organised approach, especially the way he provided a course outline for the academic year after our first meeting. He was always clear and reassuring and generously flexible when we had to move several times. His real enthusiasm for the subject and his detailed notes helped our daughter to get the grade we had hoped (but not always believed) she could achieve.” “Jimmy has wide-ranging knowledge and a discerning mind. He is pleasant and personable with a quietly outgoing personality that makes him a good teacher. He responds to students with kindness and sympathy and is genuinely interested in helping them. He is a highly capable teacher of English and I can recommend him without reservation.” ‘Jimmy is very helpful with great knowledge in English Literature and well planned lessons. My son has made tremendous progress in English especially in creative writing since he learned from Jimmy. Jimmy is warm and pleasant. My son enjoys learning with him and likes reading the books he suggested too.’ “Jimmy helped my son to prepare to his GCSCs exams in English and English literature. Thanks to Jimmy my son (who is not a native speaker) became confident and he feels like he has done well. Jimmy is a very reliable tutor. He understands the need well and develops a creative approach to tutoring. My son enjoyed his sessions with Jimmy, also because Jimmy has a very positive energy and friendly attitude to his students.” “Jimmy is great and very dedicated! I have already noticed my grades going up significantly after just four lessons....”
What locations do you tutor in?
Chelsea London and surrounding areas. I also tutor over skype.
What is your personal message to students?
I am an experienced English Literature and Language tutor with a background in teaching and journalism. I have taught students of all levels, from 11+ through GCSE to A2, as well as working with adults. While my lessons, tailored to individual students, often focus on exam preparation, I also always try to encourage a wider and deeper appreciation of the subject for its own sake. Students who enjoy English and read actively for their own pleasure are always likely to outperform those who don’t. They are also far more likely to excel in the challenging interviews required by private schools and leading universities. I believe tutors have a unique opportunity to help students forensically examine their work, pinpoint the areas they need to improve and provide the kind of bespoke exercises that will allow them to build both their understanding and confidence. While I principally tutor English I can also help students with verbal and non-verbal reasoning; and other subjects (including History, Classical Civilization and Maths) for primary and prep school exams at 11 and 13. Tuition should always be more enjoyable, effective and engaging than regular schoolwork. I look forward to working with you soon!
