Hi, I'm Jack. I'm a friendly, experienced tutor and first-class graduate of Cambridge University. I offer personalised tutoring in English Literature & German that is engaging and effective for students of all ages, abilities and learning styles. Do get in touch – I look forward to supporting you with your learning!
How would you describe your teaching style?
My process – five steps to success! 1. Firstly, I understand how each student best learns and the goals they have for our tutoring sessions together. 2. I then create new learning materials tailored to each student’s needs to ensure my sessions are as productive and focused as possible. 3. My sessions focus on developing the key skills required for academic success – textual analysis, essay writing and critical thinking. 4. I encourage self-reflective learning by tracking each student’s progress and discussing next steps openly with them. 5. For parents, I produce a personal learning log after each session which outlines the lesson objectives, content covered and the student’s overall progress.
What qualifications do you have?
I have personally obtained A* grades in English Literature & English Language GCSE's, and an A* (96%) in A-Level English Literature. I recently graduated with a first-class degree from the University of Cambridge, where I specialised in comparative literature and critical theory.
Tell us about your experience...
I have been tutoring English Literature for over 4 years, helping students to achieve excellent results in their GCSE & A-Level examinations. My tutees have consistently achieved above their predicted marks, typically by two grades at GCSE level. My teaching resources have been published by TES (Times Educational Supplement) and have been downloaded over 2,000 times. I have also worked as an academic tutor for the award-winning Oxford Summer Courses programme.
What locations do you tutor in?
All of my sessions are offered online via Skype or Zoom.
What is your personal message to students?
GCSE/A-Level Students Typically, my students require support preparing for their GCSE/A-Level examinations. I regularly teach AQA, Edexcel & OCR courses, and work within the syllabus of your exam board to ensure my sessions are relevant to each student’s course. My teaching reinforces the classroom-based learning students receive at school whilst identifying and plugging gaps in knowledge at a comfortable pace. With student and parent agreement, I set small homework tasks and offer marked feedback in the next session. Similarly, as the examination period nears, I encourage students to complete mock responses. I mark all mock paper answers and discuss critical aspects of exam technique with students in my lessons. Adult Learners If you are an adult learner and would like to improve your knowledge of English Literature, please do get in touch. I have previously tutored working professionals who are not working towards examinations but would like to improve their own writing, familiarise themselves with the literary canon and better understand literary techniques.
