I am an experienced science teacher with a Master’s and Doctorate in chemistry, specialising in online science tuition. I am also an examiner for GCSE, A level and International Baccalaureate Diploma chemistry, so have a deep understanding of what is needed for exam success. My students consistently achieve excellent grades, enabling them to study top-flight degree programmes such as medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine at leading universities. In 2017, 80 % of my A Level students achieved an A* or A grade, 100 % of my International Baccalaureate students achieved level 6 or 7, and 100 % of my GCSE students achieved an A* or A grade. Some of my recent students’ destinations include the Royal Veterinary College, Manchester University, Edinburgh University, Cambridge University, Oxford University, Imperial College, Durham University, Queen Mary (London), Newcastle University, Leicester University, Bristol University and King's College, London.

How would you describe your teaching style?

My teaching style is very interactive and focuses on first building a firm understanding of theory before attempting to apply knowledge. A typical lesson would start with a quick activity to introduce the topic and recap prior leaning, followed by a short teaching phase where we review the key theory that needs to be learned. As much as possible, I will use videos, animations and quizzes to bring concepts to life. After that, we go through worked examples together to ensure your understanding is secure, before looking at past paper questions. When preparing for exams, I will set timed exercises and full papers that I will mark and provide you with feedback on. This will help you improve your exam technique, avoid common exam mistakes, and give better answers.

What qualifications do you have?

I hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), a PGCE in Chemistry (Newcastle University), a Doctorate (PhD) in Organic Chemistry (Durham University), and a Master’s degree (MChem) in Medicinal Chemistry (University of Manchester).

Tell us about your experience...

My professional experience has been developed through my roles as a qualified teacher of science, a private tutor of chemistry from school level to degree level, and as an examiner for GCSE, A level and International Baccalaureate Diploma chemistry. Having also enjoyed a successful career in the chemical industry, I have the real-world experience necessary to bring science to life and teach beyond the textbook. Drawing on my science and business background, I can add significant value by helping you with UCAS personal statements, interview preparation and coursework.

What locations do you tutor in?

I now tutor exclusively online.

What is your personal message to students?

My tutoring is personalised to your individual needs, helping you to build confidence and master difficult topics at a pace that is right for you. As an examiner, I have intimate knowledge of the exam system and understand how to achieve top grades. I will give you resources and strategies that will improve both your theoretical understanding, and your exam technique. I will also give very detailed feedback so that you know exactly where you are, where you are going, and what you need to do to achieve your target grade.
