Want to get that dream job by passing an interview in English? I can help you. Need to improve your English to get a promotion at work? Again, I can help. If you want to do a test such as the IELTS, FCE, CAE or Proficiency exams then I am experienced in teaching all of these. I also particularly enjoy teaching conversational lessons in which I can help you sound more like a native speaker by focusing on things like phrasal verbs and idioms, as well on pronunciation. Get in touch today and let me know how I can help you with your English...

How would you describe your teaching style?

I can teach in a variety of styles. For general English classes then I believe that a conversational style is most useful for students. Why? Because practice in speaking to a very good 'model,' speaker is precisely what they don't get if they just try and study on their own, or join a class in a language school. Also, most students can correctly complete grammar exercises from a book but what they can't do is consistently translate what they've learnt from a book to a situation where they have to speak to people. This is not surprising because exercises from text books are highly artificial and designed to help people understand a language point. But in real life nobody says ten conditional sentences in a row as part of a conversation!! What students need is practice in speaking about real life topics in real situations.. and being given the chance to apply the grammar they know, use the vocabulary that they have learnt etc. For test preparation, I use several different techniques, depending upon the needs of the student.

What qualifications do you have?

I have completed two accredited TEFL courses, plus an additional specialist certificate in teaching people one-to-one. I am about to complete Cambridge Education's specialist course for teachers about teaching the IELTS exam, and will shortly embark on other courses of theirs to help further improve my teaching of FCE, CAE and Proficiency. I am a graduate in international relations and also have a National Council for the Training of Journalism (NCTJ) qualification.

Tell us about your experience...

I have been teaching English for the past 3.5 years. I have taught around 1,500 online lessons on platforms such as italki and Verbling. I have also taught, perhaps, 100 or so face-to-face lessons. All of the lessons that I have taught have been one-to-one and so this is the area with which I can help you. I also took part in an English camp with a company called Angloville in the Czech Republic. The camp was based mainly around helping Czech business people to improve their English. According to the course leader, I was one of the top two teachers out of the 20 or so that took part in the camp, as per the reviews given by the Czech business people that took part in the course. I have taught students from all over the world - Brazil, Russia, China, Italy, Spain, Poland, Romania etc etc. I am also a language learner myself - I am learning Portuguese and I can also speak some French and a little German - so I can easily understand how students feel when learning a language.

What locations do you tutor in?

I mainly tutor online. However, some face-to-face lessons may be possible in the areas of Carshalton, Sutton and Wallington.

What is your personal message to students?

I'm a cheerful and patient teacher. For me, helping you with your English will be a pleasure, not a chore (a chore is a word which means something that you have to do but don't like doing - such as washing the dishes). I am particularly keen to work with students who are studying for tests such as the IELTS exam or the Cambridge exams, with those who want to practice for job interviews and with those who want to learn how to speak more like a native speaker - for example by learning to use phrasal verbs and idioms in a natural way. You can contact me via e-mail, through my website or by text message (+44 7812 750518. Please note: I generally require payment 48 hours in advance for lessons and if you cancel at very short notice then I will need to charge you for the lesson - not as a punishment but because I wouldn't be able to sell the lesson to anybody else if you cancel at the last moment. Exceptions can sometimes be made in certain circumstances, but it depends on the situation.
